Academic Team

Indiana Academic Competitions Super Bowl Logo

The academic team is an extra-curricular activity involving many of the scholastic subjects that BGHS offers. Students involved in the Academic Team use their knowledge to participate in many different activities: Academic Competition, Mathematics Academic Competition, Science Academic Competition, English Academic Competition, Social Studies Academic Competition, and Fine Arts Academic Competition.


BGSN Sports

Sponsor: Nick White

Students interested in sports and event broadcasting have the opportunity to be involved with BGSN Sports. Students in BGSN Sports stay after school and produce live broadcasts of Football, Basketball, Volleyball and even drama plays. The broadcasts are live and shown on the BGSN (Beech Grove Student News) YouTube page. Students learn how to anchor, produce and direct these live events.


Book Club

Book Club is open to all BGHS students. They meet once a to discuss student selected books. Some after school activities may include book related movie nights. Love to read? Love to talk about what you have read with your friends? Join the BGHS Book Club. Happy Reading!


Cheer Block

The cheer block shows school spirit by showing up in themed apparel for the basketball games and sitting in the student section of the gym. Follow The Hive (@TheHiveBGHS) on Twitter to stay updated on what the theme is for the next game. Come to the game decked out in that night's decided gear and sit in the student section on the north side of the gym to cheer on your Hornets! Join in on the cheers your BG cheerleaders lead and get LOUD when the other team is shooting free throws. The only requirements to be a member of the cheer block is to show good sportsmanship and to HAVE FUN!


Choral Ensembles

Jubilaires - In addition to the SATB singing of advanced concert choir literature, this class teaches advanced techniques in the show choir procedures of choreography and performance styles of popular and show musics. The group travels extensively to competitions around the county and state and engages in some community performances for local organizations. Entry: Annual audition. After school rehearsals: mandatory.

Elan - This auditioned ensemble will offer an accelerated vocal experience for treble-voiced singers. The class will focus on SSA concert and show music as well as traditional styles of music. The group also travels to competitions around the county and state and engages in some community performances for local organizations. Entry: Annual audition. After school rehearsals: mandatory.

Chamber Ensemble - This is offered to all BGHS students that have an interest in vocal music. The course works in a small group setting to highlight and build the students' voices through concert, jazz, contemporary, and traditional styles of music. Entry: Director placement.


Color Guard

Color Guard - The B.G.H.S. color guard is a year-round activity, which is made up of two seasons. Fall guard is the guard that performs with the B.G.H.S. band. They start in the summer with workshops, then they have tryouts. You are required to attend all contests, and practices to be in it. Winter guard starts two weeks after fall guard and is much different. Winter guard is a mixture of drama, dance, ballet, and flag and rifle work. You practice from November to January, then contests start from January to March. You are also required to try out for winter guard.


DECA

DECA (An Association of Marketing Students) is a co-curricular, international youth organization with an emphasis on developing civic consciousness, leadership skills, social intelligence, and vocational understanding within the student members. DECA offers a comprehensive program of competitive events that contribute to the development of skills necessary for careers in marketing, merchandising, management, and entrepreneurship. The DECA Competency-Based Competitive Events Program facilitates the effective integration of DECA as an integral component of the total marketing education instructional program. Events are designed to enable students to engage in activities that will extend their interests and skills for careers in marketing and to measure, via performance indicators, the degree to which skills have already been acquired.


Drama Club

The purpose of Drama Club is to promote the appreciation for theatre performing arts. It provides students with opportunities to participate in supervised, creative dramatic activities, including impromptu skits, improvisation games, vocal music, dance, costume design, set design, and tech crew. The club will work on creative thinking skills, encourage teamwork, and provide students with enriched learning experiences in the area of performing arts.


FCCLA

FCCLA is a national student organization aimed at personal growth and leadership through Family and Consumer Sciences education. Students collaborate with peers and form partnerships to better address issues related to personal, family, work and societal issues.


FFA

The FFA is a leadership organization that focuses on leadership development, personal growth and career success for the members. Any student enrolled in an Agriculture class can be in an FFA member and enjoy the rewards of membership including college scholarships, leadership camps and conventions, career development events, fun, food and friends. The Beech Grove FFA will look great on your resume!


French club

The purpose of the French club is to give students out of class experience in French culture and lifestyle that they can not get by just taking the class. Anyone currently enrolled in French class or anyone who has completed 4 semesters of French, but is not currently in a French class, can join this club.


GAY-STRAIGHT ALLIANCE (GSA)

The Beech Grove High School Gay-Straight Alliance is a safe place for support and expression, bringing students of different sexual orientations and gender identities together to learn, meet new people, provide solidarity, and have fun. Through acceptance at all activities, our goal is to empower LGBTQ+ students and reduce feelings of isolation, depression, and anxiety.

For 93 years, Quill and Scroll has been honoring the best work done by student journalists around the world. We provide students and their advisers with resources to do great work and to have it evaluated. Whether it’s through our stories, our contests, our evaluation service, our scholarships or our pins and graduation paraphernalia, we salute great scholastic journalism at our charter schools. High achieving yearbook students are eligible for International Quill and Scroll Society. 


National Honor Society

To be considered for membership in the National Honor Society, students must earn a minimum GPA of 3.25 based on five semesters for juniors and seven semesters for seniors. Activity points and character ratings are also important components to meet requirements for membership. Although you must have reached junior status to be eligible for membership, it is important to realize that the requirements are accumulative and all semester grades are important beginning with those earned as a freshman. National Honor Society also has four officers on the leadership team.

Quiz Bowl

Quiz Bowl is an academic team that competes in events that require a broad knowledge base of all subject areas. From mathematics to literature, to sports trivia, anything is a potential question at a match. The team competes in the White River Academic League.


Robotics

Sponsor: Tommy Kompier

The Robotics Team builds and programs a robot that can perform both autonomously and by a driver to complete different types of tasks in competition using the VEX robotics system. Competitions are held on weekends for teams to compete for honors and for a place a the state competition. Teams are paired randomly with other teams at the competitions in order to score points to qualify for the Championship rounds. In addition, teams may compete in programming challenge and/or driver challenge to score points to qualify for the state and world competitions. Sociedad honorario hispanica

In order to be a member of Sociedad Honorario Hispánica (Spanish Honor Society), Beech Grove High School students must demonstrate a high level of achievement in Spanish language courses over a period of three consecutive semesters and maintain this throughout their high school career. This national honor society is sponsored by the American Association of Teachers of Spanish and Portuguese.

Spanish Club

All students currently enrolled in Spanish are eligible for membership in this club. Its purpose is to offer an appreciation of Hispanic culture through films, games, arts and crafts, and food.


Spell Bowl

Indiana Academic Competitions Spell Bowl

The Spell Bowl Team has 3 competitions in the fall of each year. The team consists of 10 members who compete in a written spelling contest. The list for the following year is posted mid-April so students can study the list of approximately 3,000 words over the summer to prepare for the following year's competition.


Student Council

Sponsor: Paige Anderson

Student Council is a group of students that put on dances, assemblies, community service projects, and help establish school spirit. Cabinet, class officers and class representatives are elected at the end of each school year for the following year. The cabinet is an elected group of students who have specific jobs. A Student Body President, Vice President, and a President's cabinet are elected by members of the student council to oversee the responsibilities of the student council. If you are interested in becoming a part of Beech Grove High School Student Council, please contact Mrs. Anderson.


Wrestlerettes

This organization is a support group for the Beech Grove High School wrestling program. Selection for membership is based on a written essay and personal interview. Projects are aimed to create revenue as well as offer a service.
