Grants, Aid, and Loans

Pell Grants

Pell Grants do not have to be paid back. They are based on financial need, your costs to attend school, your status as a full or part-time student, and your plans to attend school for a full academic year or less. The maximum Pell Grant for 2005-2006 was $4050. You can only receive one Pell Grant each year. Learn more about Pell Grants here.

Stafford Loans

Stafford Loans must be paid back. There are several categories of Stafford Loans. Depending on the type of repayment program, they are called either Direct Stafford Loans or FFEL Stafford Loans. Depending on your financial need, you may qualify for a subsidized loan, or an unsubsidized loan. Those students who qualify for subsidized loans, based on financial need, have their interest payments provided by the government during school and up to six months afterward. Unsubsidized loans are available in addition to subsidized loans or for some students who may not qualify for subsidized loans. Amounts vary. Learn more about Stafford Loans here.

Perkins Loans

Perkins Loans must be paid back. Perkins Loans are low interest (5 percent) loans for students with exceptional financial need. You may borrow up to $4000 for each academic year. You may be allowed as many as ten years to repay the loan in full. Learn more about Perkins Loans here.

PLUS Loans

PLUS Loans must be paid back. These loans are for parents who will be paying for their student's college costs. They may receive the cost of attendance minus the amount already received through other financial aid. The interest rate does not exceed 9 percent. Learn more about PLUS Loans here.
